Glenullin U-14travelled to Loup on Sunday with both teams
already recording two victories each in the competition, with Glenullin going
down by a point with Loup scoring a goal from a late penalty with a final
scoreline Glenullin 2-2 Loup 1-6. Glenullin played with the breeze in the first
half after missing a few early scores Nial Toal who has been having a excellent
campaign scored an excellent goal, Loup responded well scoring a couple of fine
points, some fine defensive work by James Conway and Oisin McGowan in the
Glenullin defence. Glenulin finished the half with a fine Jack McIlvar point to
put Glenullin narrowly ahead at half-time by a pt playing into a stiff breeze
in the second half. Loup started the second half strongly and quickly levelled
the scores with further Loup pressure ahead by 2pts with 5 to play. Glenullin
with their never say die attitude started to run at the Loup defence with Conor
Rafferty, Daniel O Kane and Fergal Close playing some good ball into the
Glenullin forward line with Karl Mullan, Cathal Hasson and Diarmuid McNicholl
making some fine runs, with the constant pressure DiarmuidMcNicholl won a
penalty. Up stepped Karl Mullan who Scored a fine goal with a coolly taken
penalty to put Glenullin ahead by 2pts with time almost up. Loup refused to lay
down working the ball upfield hitting a high ball into the edge of the square
the referee spotted an enfridgement and gave a second penalty in as many
minutes Loup scored from the resultant penalty to put them a pt ahead, this
proved to be the last score of the game with Loup holding out with a one pt
win. While this was a disappointing result for this young Glenullin side there
is much more to come from this side as the season has only started for them.
Training continues on Thursday night turnouts have been fantastic with upwards
of 30 players at each of the sessions. The team management of Dermot McNicholl
& Paul McGowan welcomed back Terry Mullan who had been working in London
for the past number of months.
We would like to congratulate our clubman Neil McNicholl
who played a valuable part in getting St Patricks Maghera to the Macrory Cup
Final their first since 2003. Glenullin have played a big part in the success
of the Macrory cup in Maghera since they first lifted the cup in 1977 with
upwards of 30 winners medals to come into the cup over that period. Dermot
McNicholl was without question the greatest player ever to have played in the
competition playing in 5 consecutive finals from 1980 to 1984 winning 4 medals
and captaining the side twice.

John Mitchel’s GFC host “Live to
Play” evening.
On Thursday,1st March,
Glenullin GFC hosted a “Live to Play” evening. “Live to Play” is aimed at all
drivers, but particularly our young male drivers, aged 17-21.
Club Secretary, Gerard O’Kane,
welcomed a large crowd to the hall, the majority being young men and women.
Co-ordinator, Paul Gale, thanked the Ulster Council for backing the initiative,
John Mitchel’s for hosting, as well as welcoming members of the Fire and Rescue
and the PSNI Traffic Branch. County Chairman, John Keenan spoke about the need
to educate all road users, but especially our young members. He said that
everything must be done to ensure our young members stay safe on the roads and
free to continue to play Gaelic Games.
Local club member, Denis Heaney,
spoke passionately about his own experience and how a bad choice impacted on
his life. He informed us that 65%-75% of all injuries from accidents would be
significantly lessened if the occupants of the car wore seatbelts.
PSNI Constable, John Wilson
continued with a very hard hitting presentation on the impact of careless
driving. He informed us that 17-24 year old males were 4 times more likely to
kill or seriously injure themselves or others. He emphasized that all actions
within a car are about CHOICES.
The evening concluded with a
demonstration from the Fire and Rescue team who simulated a car crash and the
extraction of the injured parties.
The Club would like to thank all
members of the Emergency Services for their time in delivering this very
worthwhile evening.
Great victory on
Saturday night for Derry seniors with a comprehensive victory over Monaghan
this was a fine team performance with our club mates team captain Patrick
Bradley top scorer scoring some fine points. Also great to see Gerard O Kane
back to his best being at the heart of much of Derrys play.
Also congratulations to our clubman Liam Bradley Antrim manager who has once
again guided Antrim to the top od division 3 with fine victories over Sligo,
Tipperary & Offaly.
Building works are progressing with the hall extension well ahead of schedule
with the first floor layer this week, it is going to be a most impressive
building when finished adding upwards of 3000 sq ft of additional space with
second hall, kitchen facilities, suites of meeting rooms on the first floor
accesses by stairwell and lift. Work hopes to start shortly on the 3G pitch.
Glenullin hosted señor scor on Sunday night to a full house with Glenullin
completing in almost all
Competitions.
Glenullin had a visit from the president of the GAA Christy Cooney, the seventh
GAA president to visit our Club since the first visit by Paddy McFlynn in 1978.
By all accounts the president was very impressed by the club with its current
facilities and with the current phase of development.
