Seniors:

Glenullin V Magherafelt

Glenullin’s second away game got off to a bad start even before a ball was thrown in, with the withdrawal through injury of Paddy Bradley. However the Glen got off to a flier with a simple Eoin Bradley free after strong running from centre half Karl Mc Nicholl. Another piece of excellent play from the impressive Mc Nicholl lead to Glenullin’s second point from Gerard O’Kane. Magherafelt took control of the game with some hard, direct running, playing a 2 man full forward line and scored 4 points without reply. However only for some stout defending from Chrissy Mc Nicholl denied Magherafelt a greater lead. 2 Eoin Bradley frees, one a monster effort, kept the visitors in touch at half time. The Glen scored the first point of the second half with a Bradley free. The introduction of Eunan O’Kane made a huge impact on the Glen team, as he started to turn defence into attack and put the Magherafelt team under huge pressure. Indeed the score of the game came from an O’Kane raid which ended in a superb Brian Mullan point. Glenullin continued to press and had a couple of goal chances but failed to capitalise. Magherafelt held on to win by 2.

Under 16

The Under 16 team suffered a narrow 2 point defeat at home to a very physical Slaughtmanus team. No doubt the boys will regroup and come back strongly in their next game.

Under 12

Glenullin hosted an excellent blitz with visiting teams, Newbridge and Faughnavale providing the opposition. The youngsters put on a superb show of talent and sportsmanship. Thanks to the visitors for landing promptly and taking part.

Minors.

Our minors were defeated away from home to Slaughtmanus. Next up is Banagher at Ballerin on Monday at 7pm.

Under 10

The under 10’s had a great blitz on Sunday morning. Both teams put on a super show. Well done lads!

Under 8

The under 8 teams put on a mighty show at Owenbeg on Friday night. The boys put Slaughtneil. Lavey and Colraine to the sword.

Under 14

The U-14 had a good run out in a recent challenge game against Agohill. Reports from the match say the boys played very well.

Seniors.

Play Magherafelt away from home this Sunday. Throwup 2pm and 3.30pm.

Seniors:

Glenullin 1.12 Lavey 0.11

Glenullin produced an excellent team performance to win an important 2nd victory in the Senior league. The home team showed their intent from the throw-in, winning the ball and moving it forward to record the first point through Paddy Bradley. Glenullin added a couple of points before Lavey got themselves back into the game. Lavey, aware of the threat posed by the Derry ace, played an extra marker on Bradley as well as deploying a sweeper. This ultimately backfired on them as Terry Mullan played the free man excellently, pushing up to great effect. With John O’Kane lording the square and man-of-the-match, Dane Higgins dominating midfield, the platform was set for a home victory. Strong performances from Chrissy Higgins and Barry Mullan at corner back as well as the excellent Mullan brothers in the half-back line, Glenullin’s forwards were always going to flourish. Ruarai Bradley and goal scorer, Karl Mc Nicholl were to the fore.

Seniors:

 Ballinderry 1.13 V Glenullin 0.7

Glenullin will have to revisit the drawing board after the outcome of their match against Ballinderry at Shamrock Park. Leaving the pitch at half-time still very much in this game, they will be very disappointed with their second half performance, as the excellent Ballinderry defence strangled every Glenullin attack into submission.

Glenullin started the game brightly and their accomplished defence did some sterling work to repel early Ballinderry attacks. Indeed it was this stout defending and clever sweeping in defence which led to 2 Paddy Bradley frees to give the visitors an early foothold in the game. Some superb fielding from midfielders Dane Higgins and Neil Mullan resulted in another Bradley pointed free. Their lead should have been extended when a series of excellent moves forced two 45s, neither of which yielded a score. However Glenullin’s inventive and quick play was rewarded with a superbly taken point from Dermot O’Kane. This seemed to galvanise the Ballinderry team who scored 6 unanswered points to lead 0.7 to 0.4 at half-time.

The restart of the match gave little indication of what was to come with a very smart P. Bradley point after some lovely Glenullin play. The turning point was the Ballinderry goal. A beautifully fielded high ball from Glenullin’s Dominic Mc Ilvar, was turned over leading to a quick ball into their full forward who finished with aplomb. This gave the Ballinderry team the confidence to dominate the rest of the game and run out 1.13 to 0.07 winners.

Glenullin will look to build on their strong defending and midfield which provided a strong platform for the future. Eunan O’Kane featured very strongly in the full back line as did the 3 Mullan brothers in the half back line. With Neil Mullan and Dane Higgins more than holding their own at midfield, Glenullin will look to their forward line to step up to the plate in the next league game.

U’14s

The boys will continue to train at 7pm on Thursday nights and 9am on Sunday morning.

Glenullin U-14travelled to Loup on Sunday with both teams already recording two victories each in the competition, with Glenullin going down by a point with Loup scoring a goal from a late penalty with a final scoreline Glenullin 2-2 Loup 1-6. Glenullin played with the breeze in the first half after missing a few early scores Nial Toal who has been having a excellent campaign scored an excellent goal, Loup responded well scoring a couple of fine points, some fine defensive work by James Conway and Oisin McGowan in the Glenullin defence. Glenulin finished the half with a fine Jack McIlvar point to put Glenullin narrowly ahead at half-time by a pt playing into a stiff breeze in the second half. Loup started the second half strongly and quickly levelled the scores with further Loup pressure ahead by 2pts with 5 to play. Glenullin with their never say die attitude started to run at the Loup defence with Conor Rafferty, Daniel O Kane and Fergal Close playing some good ball into the Glenullin forward line with Karl Mullan, Cathal Hasson and Diarmuid McNicholl making some fine runs, with the constant pressure DiarmuidMcNicholl won a penalty. Up stepped Karl Mullan who Scored a fine goal with a coolly taken penalty to put Glenullin ahead by 2pts with time almost up. Loup refused to lay down working the ball upfield hitting a high ball into the edge of the square the referee spotted an enfridgement and gave a second penalty in as many minutes Loup scored from the resultant penalty to put them a pt ahead, this proved to be the last score of the game with Loup holding out with a one pt win. While this was a disappointing result for this young Glenullin side there is much more to come from this side as the season has only started for them. Training continues on Thursday night turnouts have been fantastic with upwards of 30 players at each of the sessions. The team management of Dermot McNicholl & Paul McGowan welcomed back Terry Mullan who had been working in London for the past number of months.

We would like to congratulate our clubman  Neil McNicholl who played a valuable part in getting St Patricks Maghera to the Macrory Cup Final their first since 2003. Glenullin have played a big part in the success of the Macrory cup in Maghera since they first lifted the cup in 1977 with upwards of 30 winners medals to come into the cup over that period. Dermot McNicholl was without question the greatest player ever to have played in the competition playing in 5 consecutive finals from 1980 to 1984 winning 4 medals and captaining the side twice.

John Mitchel’s GFC host “Live to Play” evening.

On Thursday,1st March, Glenullin GFC hosted a “Live to Play” evening. “Live to Play” is aimed at all drivers, but particularly our young male drivers, aged 17-21.

Club Secretary, Gerard O’Kane, welcomed a large crowd to the hall, the majority being young men and women. Co-ordinator, Paul Gale, thanked the Ulster Council for backing the initiative, John Mitchel’s for hosting, as well as welcoming members of the Fire and Rescue and the PSNI Traffic Branch. County Chairman, John Keenan spoke about the need to educate all road users, but especially our young members. He said that everything must be done to ensure our young members stay safe on the roads and free to continue to play Gaelic Games.

Local club member, Denis Heaney, spoke passionately about his own experience and how a bad choice impacted on his life. He informed us that 65%-75% of all injuries from accidents would be significantly lessened if the occupants of the car wore seatbelts.

PSNI Constable, John Wilson continued with a very hard hitting presentation on the impact of careless driving. He informed us that 17-24 year old males were 4 times more likely to kill or seriously injure themselves or others. He emphasized that all actions within a car are about CHOICES.

The evening concluded with a demonstration from the Fire and Rescue team who simulated a car crash and the extraction of the injured parties.

The Club would like to thank all members of the Emergency Services for their time in delivering this very worthwhile evening.

Great victory on Saturday night for Derry seniors with a comprehensive victory over Monaghan this was a fine team performance with our club mates team captain Patrick Bradley top scorer scoring some fine points. Also great to see Gerard O Kane back to his best being at the heart of much of Derrys play.
Also congratulations to our clubman Liam Bradley Antrim manager who has once again guided Antrim to the top od division 3 with fine victories over Sligo, Tipperary & Offaly.
Building works are progressing with the hall extension well ahead of schedule with the first floor layer this week, it is going to be a most impressive building when finished adding upwards of 3000 sq ft of additional space with second hall, kitchen facilities, suites of meeting rooms on the first floor accesses by stairwell and lift. Work hopes to start shortly on the 3G pitch.
Glenullin hosted señor scor on Sunday night to a full house with Glenullin completing in almost all
Competitions.
Glenullin had a visit from the president of the GAA Christy Cooney, the seventh GAA president to visit our Club since the first visit by Paddy McFlynn in 1978. By all accounts the president was very impressed by the club with its current facilities and with the current phase of development.

UNDER 14'S

The boys will continue to train at 7pm on Thursday nights and 9am on Sunday morning.

Glenullin u-14 got their Feile na og campaign off to a winning start with a win over Doire Transa at Magilligan on a score line 5-7 to 2-3. Glenullin got off to a good start with Jack Mcilvar, Diarmaid McNicholl and Cathal Hasson causing all sorts of problems for the Doire Trasna defence up 2-4 after 10 minutes. Doire Trasna finished the half strongly with Glenulin goalkeeper PM McCloskey pulling off a smart save along with some good defending by Seamus O'Kane, James Conway and Fergal Close. Glenulin ended the Half up 2-4. Glenulin started the second half brightly with midfielders Daniel O Kane and Conor Rafferty setting up some good moves but resolute defending by Doire Trasna and poor finishing Glenullin were unable to build on their first half lead. Doire Trasna enjoyed their best spell in the game quickly getting some fine scores scoring. 2-3. This seemed to waken up the Glenullin team with Eugene Talbot, James McKeown and Oisin McGowan playing well. Reece Quigg scored a great goal for Glenulin to settle the nerves. Karl Mullen Glenullin centre half forward kicked a couple of crucial points in the second half with Nial Tohill involved in some good moves in the second half. Three subs made their debuts for Glenullin and all played well were Christopher Bradley, Ciaran O'Kane and Pearce McIlvar.

Next up another tough challenge in the Feile against Greenlough. Man of match Fergal Close

LIVE TO PLAY

On Thursday 1st March at 7.30pm, a demonstration will take place in the carpark of the community centre, re-enacting the trauma which follows a car crash. Emergency services(fire and police departments) will be on hand to demonstrate what happens when they come across a car accident. We would appeal to all our young members, especially those who have recently started to drive or, are just learning. The statistics for death and serious injuries due to dangerous and careless driving are staggering. This is an excellent opportunity for all of us to think about our actions on the road.

PUBLIC MEETING

There will be an open meeting for all members of the community on Wednesday 29th February. The committee wishes to extend an invitation to all to come for an update on the developments already underway. After the huge efforts you made in raising the funds, this is an excellent opportunity to hear how things are progressing, discover what the future months will bring and to ask any questions about the new hall and new pitch. We are hoping for a big turnout. This is your future….be part of it.

Under 14 training.

The U-14’s have got their training underway each Sunday at 9am. The management were delighted with the turn out last Sunday as 25 youngsters took to the field. Keep this up lads. Bring trainers also if the rain is heavy.

The U14’s were presented with their new personalised training gear, which I’m sure all parents will agree looks very smart and professional!

PLEASE NOTE UNDER 14 training has now been switched to a Thursday evening. If it is raining the hall is free.

Hope to get a challenge match this week with the Feile na nog starting in February.

Early reports from the camp are excellent. Great training and a real buzz about the place.

Please note money is now due for Club 180. Please send in your money for the coming year as soon as possible.

Disappointing night for Derry in the McKenna cup final against Tyrone going down by 3 pts. Paddy played a captains part taking some great scores in the first half, the harsh sending off of James Conway and the early injury picked up by Gerard was just a step too far in Derry’s hope of retaining the McKenna Cup. Wishing Gerard a speedy recovery, hopefully he will be fit for the Galway game.

Work has started at the community centre with the new 3G pitch also to be started next month.

Please note all membership is now due. Please see a member of the committee for payment. £20 per adult.

The Minors have started training again for the year. We wish them and their management all the best for the year ahead. Look out for forthcoming fixtures.
